Beach time is the best time

The best child-friendly beaches of Corfu can be found on the west coast. Glyfada and Pelekas create an idyllic setting for sunbathers and swimmers. Situated only 16 km away from Corfu Town, the island’s capital, the beach of Glyfada has been awarded the Blue Flag distinction due to its powdery soft sand and crystal clear waters. The beach provides access to sunbeds and umbrellas, as well as water sports and plenty of taverns.

Also close to Corfu Town, awaits the idyllic Pelekas, a splendid sandy beach. It is a lot less tranquil and peaceful than Glyfada but it has no modern facilities except for toilets and showers. Avlaki beach in the north of the island is blessed with calm waters, ideal for kids. The local school here is ready to teach children how to swim, windsurf or sail a dinghy!

If you’re searching for the most popular beaches though, head to Paleokastritsa. Situated 25 km northwest of the island’s capital, this picturesque village has six sandy and pebbled beaches set in a beautiful backdrop dominated by olive groves. Many families choose to spend their holiday here due to the abundance of hotels, restaurants, and entertaining things to do.

Water activities for all ages

Whether it’s swimming in the crystalline waters of the Mediterranean or splashing at the water parks on the island, one thing is sure: your kids will spend more time in the water than on the sand. Visit Aqualand, one of the most impressive waterparks on the continent and you’ll discover a water paradise. Situated in Agios Ioannis, this waterpark covers an area of 75 km2 and invites both grown-ups and kids to test their 36 waterslides and 15 pools. The lazy river is there for those who want to take things slowly, as is the wave pool, black hole and sharp twists and spins for the adventurous. Rafting and kayaking are also possible in the park. The little kids have their own shallow pools and mini rides to keep them focused.

On the north coast of the island, in Acharavi, you’ll find the Hydropolis Waterpark. More slides, tubes, and free falls await here, as well as miniature rides and an adventure playground. For an underwater adventure, take the kids on a glass-bottomed boat. The modern Nautilus is a comfortable and luxurious boat ready to familiarize passengers with the fascinating marine life. Moreover, the crew will also tell you interesting things about the historical sights you’ll be seeing above the water.

Fascinating walking tours…even for the kids

Although studying history might not sound like a lot of fun, as soon as you’ll discover the island’s layers of history, the settlements of Corfu will capture your attention. The island gravitates around its history and traditions offering travelers the chance to discover pieces of its heritage. Corfu Town is the jewel of the island, a superb town that boasts superb architectural masterpieces left behind by the Venetians, French, and the British. Built on a promontory, the town is adorned with superb mansions and palaces, as well as fascinating fortresses.

The Old and New Venetian Fortresses are a source of fascination for visitors of all ages. The fortresses guard the harbors of the town. While the Old Fortress dates back to the Byzantine period and was reinvented by the Venetians between the 15th and 18th centuries, the massive New Fortress was built between 1576 and 1645 (not so new after all!) and features numerous underground tunnels that connect it to the old fortress and the town. Do visit the neighborhood of Kanoni to discover lovely Venetian buildings, the ruins of the Ancient City, and beautiful views of the airport, and don’t hesitate to spend some time in the charming area of Mandouki.
