Surfing In Tenerife

Tenerife is a part of the Canary Islands that features a number of classic surfing locations both for beginners and advanced surfers. As such, Tenerife holidays are perfect for those who live surf or just want to give it a go. In all there are more than 30 surfing locations in Tenerife, making it a virtual surfers paradise offering a wide range of surfing experiences.

For beginner surfers who want to experience left breaks there is El Lobo that features a point break setting. For more advanced surfers who like to take on the lefts there is the reef and rocky setting of La Enramada. All surfers can also enjoy the left hand breaks at Los Gigantes that features a beach-break, or the reef and rocky setting of Piscinas.

For those surfers searching for locations with right breaks, the reefy, coral setting of Candelaria is recommended. More experienced surfers who can handle rights in a rocky/reef setting will enjoy conquering the waves at Billboards or La Derecha.

There are a number of surfing locations in Tenerife that feature rights and lefts in all types of settings, including reef and rocky, point breaks, beach breaks, and sand bars. Two locations that offer some of the most active waves are Bajamar and Playa Socorro, which feature surfing for all levels of surfers. El Charco-La Piscina is known as a Tenerife surfing location that is highly rated but is only recommended for kamikaze or pro surfers because of the difficulty of the surf here. La Caleta de adeje is another Tenerife surfing location that is highly recommended for more experienced surfers.

The best surfing in Tenerife is typically between November and February. The average swell size is greater in January and February, and you can usually bring your springsuit from January through April while a shorty is recommended during the rest of the year. In March, April, September and October, there is still an opportunity for great surfing, just not as much as in the premium months. May and June will not present as many great surfing opportunities and surfing in Tenerife in July and August is virtually non-existent.

With more than 30 surfing locations and many that offer surfing activity for almost the entire year, it is easy to see why Tenerife is one of the most traveled to surfing destinations in the world. Surfing in Tenerife is greatly appreciated by surfers from all over the globe, no matter what level of surfer they might be, and will likely continue to grow in popularity among the surf enthusiasts of the world.
