Surfing in Morocco

Since my youth, i was always amazed by the endless right hander of our coast line, and thought that these were normal waves, and you can find this quality waves everywhere. After doing some travelling around the world, I finally got aware of the high quality waves that we surf in Taghazout area. Now I would say that it’s one of the best play grounds I surfed.

Back in the 80’s, only few surfers were coming to the area of Taghazout Morocco for surfing.  Due to its fame for being a hardcore surfing destination back in the days. The first surfers of Morocco were the GI’s from an American military base in Kenitra. They brought Coca Cola, Budweiser and Surfing to Morocco, and the first surf board was a Malibu DAKOTA. This board was the only board around for 4 years. The first Moroccan surfer’s name is Mimoun, he was though by the Americans how to surf and he as invited to the French competition ‘’ Championat de France de Surf Riding” in 1963, he was the first Moroccan surfer on an international competition. Slowly the sport got developed along our coast thanks to the generation of Australians that escaped Australia to not go to the Vietnam War, the same generation that discovered a multitude of surf spots around the world. During the 70’s Taghazout became a travelling surfer’s must. And Taghazout started appearing on all the surf maps.

Now Taghazout have became a surfing destination for all levels of surfers and the village of Taghazout became a real surfer’s village with several surf shops and few surf camps offering surfing holidays for surfers of all levels.  Nowadays Taghazout became a perfect surfing destination for the surfers of the world, as it became possible to come in an organized way to visit this surfing Mecca in all comfort and luxury necessary for a surfing holiday of a life time. Several surf schools and camps started up and also started offering a wide range of accommodations and services that suits surfers of all levels and budgets.

The very cheap flights to Morocco have made of this destination a very affordable surfing holidays. For a long time it have been considered as a winter destination, but now everybody agrees that Morocco still have one of the best surfs of the Atlantic in the summer time due to its location in open Atlantic. In the winter time, a multitude of pro surfers and advanced surfers come to enjoy the endless right handers that Taghazout area can offer them, it’s the best winter break and good surf for European surfers, not to mention that people from around the world make the trip till here, we’ve crossed Americans, Brazilians, South Africans, Australians, Latin Americans and more in our line ups.  All year round, the Moroccan coast line offers the possibility to learn to surf in perfect conditions and in pleasant temperature, both inside and outside of the water.

One of the best surfing companies that we would recommend in the Area of Taghazout is Africa Extrem Surf Camps (http://www.africaextrem.com) this surf school and camp is locally owned and run. They offer a range of accommodations right in front of the best surf in the area, and some of the best surf guides and surf instructors Morocco has.
