Sri Lanka is one of the best surfing vacation spots within the Indian Ocean offering high quality surfing, peaceful beautiful and very tropical surroundings and uncrowded beaches are some of the assets of the Sri Lankan coast. Surf in the country is mainly localized between the Southwest and Southeast of the Island. The south west and east coast of Sri Lanka has some excellent reef breaks that are well worth investigating.

The surf beaches of Hikkaduwa are nice and wide and swimming is safe here for all the family, though the currents are stronger south of Hikkaduwa so please be aware of this. The area has a very impressive coral reef that runs just offshore and is populated by exotic fish and sea turtles. After a shot distance southwards from the center of the reef, it diminishes given rise to a wider sandy bottomed beach with good waves ideal for surfing.

North Jetty offers a coral bottom and is a right hand wave that requires a solid swell to break well. When this wave really gets going it can be one of the best rides of your life and offers a long ride with very hollow sections. Bennys is another spot with a Coral bottom this is a very fast left hand wave and can be testing with the wave often breaking over very sharp reef with shallow water, but the rides are again very exciting. This is an experienced only spot.

The main reef offers again a Coral bottom but great right and left hand surfing waves and is a real credit to what Sri Lanka surfing is all about and will be one of the waves you will surf regular on your vacation. Its fun and relaxed surfing. Inside Reef as its adeptly known is a Coral bottom that breaks fast and hollow with both left and rights and can be a real thrill seekers ride. The main surfing beach breaks of Hikkaduwa offer Sandy bottom. Just south of Inside Reef (above) there is a number of sandy spots which several types of waves and this area is recommended for the beginner, inexperienced and moderate standard surfer.

The surfing season in Hikkaduwa starts in October and ends in early May but it is possible to surf other times of the year however the water is not as crystal clean can get rough and the swell can not be guaranteed.
