Tenerife, 'the island of eternal spring', is the largest of the seven Canary Islands and a hugely popular year-round destination for normal travelers. With a wonderful annual climate averaging out at 23C, considered by many to be the best in the world, and a wide range of well-equipped resorts. Tenerife caters to the young and the old, and attracts both families and individuals wanting luxury, wonderful setting and fun in the sun. Tenerife offers an extremely diverse range of landscapes - the north is full of verdant subtropical vegetation, forests and banana plantations with a dramatic rugged coastline, whilst the south is more arid and desert-like, filled with a lunar landscape and a mix of black and white beaches. In central Tenerife, the island boasts the highest point in all of Spain - the majestic Mount Teide volcano, measuring 3,718m, and visible from all over the island.
It is no surprise that Tenerife is so popular for surfing holidays for those in the know and looking for amazing surfing. It has such a range of activities and entertainment, from world class surfing, scuba-diving and parasailing to world class golfing and great bars and restaurants. There are theme parks and shows galore too. Be swept away by the colour and beauty of the flora and mountain range or gasp in wonder as magnificent eagles, vultures and condor swoop over your head at Eagle park.
If you are on Surfing holiday with children there are many theme parks from the most famous which is Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz, or Eagle Park (Aguilas Park) near Los Cristianos. Skypark makes a great day out too with its terrifyingly high thrill rides. It also has two pools, one is great for little ones who can potter about amongst water spouts and fiddle with water wheels. The other is deeper and is more fun for older kids of all ages. Scuba-diving, Bob-diving, quad-biking, rock-climbing, camel riding... you may not have enough time to fit it all into one surfing vacation.
Tenerife really do offer something for every type of surfer, whether its' scenic hiking up a volcano or in a deep ravine, sport-fishing for marlin or bungee-jumping or just catching that perfect barrel, and yes they have lots of them! The resorts of Tenerife vary dramatically in atmosphere, from busy thriving towns to sedate and authentic with traditional Spanish tapas and locally-made wine can be found in the typical Canarian bars throughout the smaller less-developed parts of Tenerife.
Powerful waves hit the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands all year around and along the full stretch of the coastline, it is the perfect surfing destination offering quality and very good surfing.
There are world-class surf spots all over Tenerife. The southwestern side of the island offers famous surfing spots such as La Izquierda, K16 and El Conquistador (these waves are undoubtedly the best and most famous on Tenerife with La Lzquierida being the best left hand wave in Europe and the one gave Tenerife its name for surfing back in the early 70's. They offer long, tubey and very hollow waves that will drive you wild with excitement.
Playa Martianez is an impressive curving beach, protected by a breakwater with two surfing spots where the waves break over sand/rock bottom. The first, a right-hander known by the locals as La Derecha, is good for beginners and long boarders wave. The second, called La Baja, is a shorter, faster wave which works best with a bigger swell.
Playa Jardin is found west of the old town and offers a long beautiful beach, with rocks dividing it into two parts. The waves here are less consistent but when the swell is too big for Playa Martianez, this beach break works well. It suits surfers of all levels. La Caleta is found further west along the coast - just outside the little village Garachico. These rights and lefts work up to 15 feet all year round so you never normally have an issue with size of swell. The small town Bajamar is a little further east of the northern town Puerto de la Cruz and you will find is extremely popular with professional, it is a great place to visit to watch and be inspired. Another great spot is Los Dos Hermanos is set in a spectacular bay and has powerful rights and lefts and for those looking for long right hand waves then Fuera De La Bajeta offers a great wave of true quality at times. Tenerife is simply ideal for surfing holiday or surfing vacation.
