It is an extremely picturesque rich cultural island, rising sheer out of the ocean, and generations of local people have moulded its cliffs into an amazing system of fertile terraces full of trees. The surfing of Madeira is an experience to be cherished with powerful uncrowded waves offering a real chance to test yours skills to the fullest with the full force of the Atlantic.
Madeira only has one small wave spot everything else tends to break in the region of +6ft and a misconception of inconsistent waves is perhaps due to the lack of knowledge of those writing articles on the destination. The fact is that breaks do not come alive until a size of magnitude hits the islands.... that says it all!
As with most of the European and North West African coastline, Madeira is exposed to the NW Swells that power across the Atlantic from October to April each year, however the better months are November .jpg)
to February. You must like most big wave spots expect the swell to rise and fall with great speed, you may start in 6ft and end up in 15ft surf with in 2 hours!
The surfing holiday break at Paul Do Mar is a fast hollow right hand point break and is only 5 mins walk away from some accommodation.
Top waves on the island include Ponta Pequena, Jardim do Mar and the big right at Ponta do Sol. For the less experienced the two spots to head for are Faja de Areia on the north coast and Machino on the west coast.
