The island was named after a Genoese navigator called Lancelotto Malocello who arrived on the island during the second half of the XIV century opening the way to successive expeditions of French, British and Spanish sailors and merchants. Previously the isles were known as the Fortunate Islands.
Lanzarote main surfing is situated in Famara on the west coast. The small surfing resort of Famara is 
1,500 metres of beautiful beach with magnificent backdrop of volcanic mountains and has become a Surfers' paradise, although retaining its pure innocents and simplicity.
You will find you are in the most tranquil of surroundings with very little night life entertainment on offer, but only a short taxi drive across the island you can find nightlife in the busy resort of Puerto del Carmen. The Volcanic island has produced a surreal yet beautiful red landscape and is part of the World Biosphere, Famara itself has been left in its natural state. Playa de Famara is considered by many to be its most beautiful surfing beaches in Europe.
