Nicaragua is a must place you have to surf. And if you make your way to Nicaragua, the chances are that you are going to get barreled. Located between the countries of El Salvador to the north and Costa Rica to the south, Nicaragua is one of the “best bets” for surf travel from anywhere in the world.
Nicaragua takes its name from Nicarao, chief of the indigenous tribe then living around present-day Lake Nicaragua. A friendly and peaceful country that at times, received an undue share of negative press, Nicaragua is really one of the safest surfing destinations to visit in Central America. With more than a decade of political stability, this democracy has moved steadily forward and is the fastest growing "still perfect" surf destination in the world.
The nickname "land of lakes and volcanoes" describes this beautiful and fascinating country well. Two great lakes, Xolotlán (Lake Managua) and Cocibolca (Lake Nicaragua) occupy roughly 10 percent of the countries surface area, and are the largest in Central America. Running nearly parallel to the pacific coast is a chain of 58 volcanoes, six of which are active.
The country also boasts the longest rivers in Central America, vast coastal lagoons, and hundreds of miles of sea coast. As the largest and lowest Central American country, Nicaragua is essentially an emerging "land bridge" between Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Centrally located between North and South America, Nicaragua has benefited from the astonishing blend of flora and fauna from the two continents.
Pure Vacations Surf Retreat
Our accommodation is a Green, Eco-community nestled in the jungle close to Playa Maderas. It is a small ranch, located on three jungle acres with three accommodations between our Casita and Cabanas. The accommodation has been built with as minimal disruption to the environment and our closest neighbors, the howler monkeys thank us for this as do the other woodland creatures - this is a real getaway from it surfing experience. The surfing at Playa Maderas is great for standards of surfer.
Wake to the sounds of the howler monkeys in the trees and enjoy your morning coffee with the birds in the jungle. Then, head on down to the beach for a day of surfing, warm water and world class waves! Enjoy breakfast or dinner with us at the accommodation or at the local restaurant and sample Nicaraguan cuisine and hospitality. Then kick back and enjoy a tranquil evening sipping rum and star gazing whilst listening to the surf rolling in to the shoreline, exciting you for the next days surf.
If you are coming on a trip and require surf instruction then our surf instructors, Liz and Scott have “each” been surfing for over 25 years and have been teaching people to surf for a couple of decades! Our goal is to help introduce you to surfing and to always have fun!
